Honestly, a lot of the good from Season 4 was drained from my brain after that disastrous finale. It paralyzed me from writing on this site, especially since I was already having such a rough time in my personal life. However, it’s time for me to face the good in the Season and get moving toward the next one. I love my readers and I am excited to continue chatting with some of you as the season progresses. Here we go with the long overdue Best of Season 4 article that was voted on! This will help make things more positive for us in preparation for Season Five!
Again, I am sorry for my depression regarding this show’s season finale.
5th Best thing about Season 4:
Talktrueblood and Poll participants say (TIE) : Sookie washes Eric’s feet (after finding him) and he asks her if she would like to be his.
We all know Sookie didn’t have to wash Eric’s feet for him. He wasn’t especially injured at any point and he’s a vampire for crying out loud. So why did she do it at that point in their relationship? Body language teaches us that touching feet can be considered a sexual maneuver and showed us Sookie’s ability to be intimate with Eric even at that point as she caressed the vulnerable area of his body. More importantly, she cared enough about Eric to try to relieve the stress he was going through, not just do what she could to save him. She wants to take care of him the same way he tries to take care of her, showing a romantic love that goes way beyond the physical connection they later shared. In amnesia Eric’s mind, offering to make Sookie his was his way of returning the favor. Even though he barely knows her in his mind, he still has the instinct to protect her as well. Even as a vampire that is clueless about what he’s learned over the years, akin to being a young vampire like Jessica, Eric shows that he has humanity inside of him. He knows it’s the right thing to protect her in return instead of taking advantage of her and he lays his emotions bare, cracking Sookie’s cool demeanor as she washes his feet.
4th Best Thing About Season 4:
Talktrueblood and Poll Participants say (TIE): Sookie and Eric mutually exchange blood and then the viking snow fantasy ensues.
This love of this scene is obvious. It solidified the trust between Eric and Sookie. Sookie allowed Eric to bite her and Eric gave Sookie a large amount of his blood, which she took enthusiastically. To a vampire, this would symbolize the ultimate in trust and to Sookie, this shows that she literally wants to drink Eric in herself. She thirsts for Eric and feels like she is a part of him, incomplete without his part. Despite the steamy sex and lovely imagery itself, the most striking thing about this scene was the light touches about the vulnerable areas of the shoulder and head. The significance of this is explained in my body language post about the scene: “…they are connecting and totally lost in one another by looking into each other’s eyes and caressing the other’s face with a type of cupping and caressing motion. By being so close head-t0-head with the intertwined arms they are showing their trust and proving once again that their love is real.”
However, there is significance in the sex itself. Unlike the sex scenes with Bill, there is a sense of equality in their sex scenes. Bill always tries to claim dominance in their sex scenes, while Eric allows Sookie the spotlight at times and truly seems to enjoy it. The significance of this is also explained in my body language post about the scene: “…Eric and Sookie are showing equality in the relationship by switching back and forth from Eric on top to Sookie on top. When a man likes a woman on top it means he makes pleasing the woman his priority during sex; her needs can come before his sometimes and he doesn’t mind being dominated at times. ”
3rd Best Thing About Season 4:
Poll Participants say: Sookie embraces Eric and initiates a kiss on the porch.
There really couldn’t have been a better first kiss initiated by Sookie (though I think Sookie clearly kissed him back when he kissed her in Season 3). The conversation in which Sookie admits that she sees more in Eric than the bad things that he has done sets the perfect tone; I don’t think she’s referring solely to Amnesia Eric. Then, Eric’s comment about not being able to live with himself if he is the cause of her helps the viewer realize that Eric loves Sookie more than himself and I don’t think that’s limited to Amnesia Eric’s feelings either; that’s how much he loves her. Even before their full on blood exchange later, we see that their soles have connected on a profound soul-mate type of level, a level which goes beyond the obvious mutual attraction. People often make an argument for Bill by stating that he loved her enough to let her go for a while. Well, Eric was willing to leave Sookie right then in order to protect her. ( I, however, also make that argument for Non-Amnesia Eric because he could have claimed Sookie at any time but let her stay with Bill and then come to him) Yet, she decided she couldn’t let Eric go. When she embraces him and then kisses him, she embraces all of him; she is embracing everything from Amnesia Eric to the Eric who drank from Lafayette. When he caresses her neck, he promising to take care of her as reward for her mutual love and trust. There were so people that were disappointed with the kiss. Yet, we all know what all of this means for their relationship and this couldn’t have been more satisfying for those that appreciate the significance of the total scene. Finally, the kiss also actually indicates the fun side of their relationship as well. For example, my body language post states, “Hugging and kissing at the same time indicates the excitement that Sookie feels in being with Eric and the excitement that she will bring to his un-dead life in return! This also indicates that Sookie has surprises of her own to bring to Eric and senses that he can keep up with her.”
Talktrueblood says: Eric tells Sookie he was the only one that never gave up.
To me, there was nothing more romantic said by Eric during the entire season and you all seem to agree as well. This should have been the ultimate evidence that there was no way that Bill loves Sookie more than Eric. Stricken with grief, Eric could barely do anything but look for Sookie. There was no way that he could give up without a body, knowing the supernatural nature of the world around them. Meanwhile, Bill was clearly enjoying his new found power as he enjoyed flirtations with Portia and the unlimited supply of fang bangers around him. This is in addition to his own procurer. Even her family and friends that claim to love her too moved on within a year. All of this clearly showed that Eric loves Sookie the most and would do absolutely anything for her. How could we not love this kind of proof that our support of the viking is the right one?
2nd Best Thing About Season 4:
Poll Participants say: Eric, drunk from the fairy blood, swims in the sun and Alcide and Sookie find him.
Ladies got a two for one show in this scene, Alcide’s nakedness and Eric’s nakedness. Could there be two better naked bodies in one scene? But seriously, there was a lot of beauty in the scene and it perfectly reflected the beauty that the daylight must hold to Eric, a vampire condemned to eternal darkness, a vampire that only sees light in Sookie. In addition, we got to see Eric’s playful side which was a continuation of the side we got to see in the previous episode. It shows the fun and the spontaneity that Sookie would find in Eric, something we rarely witnessed in her relationship with Bill. It also reveals another side of the childlike nature of his human life, apart from his lusty affairs. Finally, we get to see Sookie save the drunken Eric and lovingly wrap him up, which adds a special touch at the end.
Talktrueblood says: Sookie saves Eric from the sun.
To me, this scene showed Sookie’s appreciation for what Eric has done for her though she seemed ungrateful in the past and it showed her devotion to him as well. It seems that Sookie’s ungrateful exterior was completely attributable to her outward denial of her feelings for Eric. She really did grow to love to him in part because she knows that he loves her enough to do whatever he can to save her, despite what it may mean for his own safety. This shows that this self-sacrificial attitude is not exclusive to Bill; the difference between Eric and Bill is that Eric does everything he can without going that route and Bill always needs the satisfaction of her knowing that he’d do that. She knows he didn’t do all that for her just because he wanted her for himself. For example, she recognizes that he put his own life at risk to save her in the bombing despite giving her blood afterward. She essentially admits that she can‘t stand going on through life without him and protects him through Antonia’s walk-into-the-sun spell. Her passion for his protection set my heart into a flutter. Apparently both recognized the intensity and meaning of the moment; the blood exchange and viking snow fantasy occur the next day.
BEST THING ABOUT SEASON 4:
Poll Participants say: Eric tells Sookie he was the only one that never gave up.
Talktrueblood says: Sookie embraces Eric and initiates a kiss on the porch.
6-10 Results of Poll Participants:
6. Eric isn’t executed then Sookie and Eric have their first time in the woods and then the house.
This obviously had to make the list. It was Eric and Sookie’s first time and it was beautiful! They had the passion we had always imagined coupled with the intimacy of the cuddling afterward. Moving from the forest to the house showed a level of energy between the two that truly satisfied fans of the couple. In addition, the passion was so great in that moment that there was no way that they could even initially make it to the house. Plus, it was nice to see Alcide’s jealousy at the site of their love making. If you’re not a fan of Alcide, it was satisfying that Alcide was able to see for himself how she feels about Eric. If you’re a fan of Alcide, it showed the love that Alcide has for Sookie and showed progression of their relationship even if it seemed to be detrimental to that relationship. If some of us love Eric and Sookie and love the fact that they finally had their first time, why did this scene miss the top 5 mark? Simply put, Bill’s sad-face invaded our television and computer screens. This was a totally unnecessary concession to Bill fans and there was no need for Eric fans to see that as they were trying to enjoy a scene they had waited over four years for. They had already had to contend with a scene meant to be sympathetic toward Bill before their first time (nevermind that Bill was going to kill Eric for selfish reasons in the first place). It was just a little insulting for them to add that in after all that.
7. Eric crawls into bed with Sookie after his bad dream.
Eric instinctively finds the most safety in Sookie’s arms and this was one of the best steps in their trust, exemplified by the safety that they felt in each other’s arms in this moment. If you read the book, this was a nod to a scene that was much loved by many readers of the series, which made it even more popular. Most importantly, the body language was absolutely lovely. Eric puts his head in Sookie’s lap and “this indicates Eric’s neediness at this point and the fact that he feels that only Sookie can make him happy now. However, it also shows that he is sensitive to Sookie and her emotions, is aware of his own emotions, and that he’ll do anything to make her happy- sexually or otherwise! ” Their spooning also “indicates Eric’s neediness at this point and the fact that he feels that only Sookie can make him happy now. However, it also shows that he is sensitive to Sookie and her emotions, is aware of his own emotions, and that he’ll do anything to make her happy- sexually or otherwise!”
8. Sookie tells Eric she always wanted him in front of Bill.
This is yet another example of the appreciation that Sookie had for Eric before he experienced amnesia. Eric fans such as I were satisfied with the admission since it confirmed what we had always known about their relationship, that Sookie was protesting her attraction to him too much. Most of us believe the mutual attraction was present ever since Sookie and Eric laid eyes on one another in Fangtasia. This is part of what made the build-up so great for fans of Sookie and Eric. If you dislike Bill as much as I do, it was also fun to see her admit that she always had a thing for him, even as she fawned all over Bill and constantly complained about Eric. This admission was sorely needed to salvage some part of that embarrassing scene for Eric in the finale.
9. Sookie tries to protect Eric from Bill.
The affection for this scene is similar to the affection for the scene in which Sookie saves Eric from the sun. Like the scene involving Antonia’s spell, it showed Sookie’s appreciation for what Eric has done for her though she seemed ungrateful in the past and it showed her devotion to him as well. What set this scene apart from that scene is the fact that Sookie lied to Bill in order to protect him. In that moment, she prioritized Eric over any lingering devotion to Bill. In desperation, she passionately put herself between Bill the door. This endearing moment made Sookie and Eric fans believe in their love even more than before. Whether this points to Sookie ultimately loving Eric more remains to be seen, but this scene certainly gave fans of the couple hope that the scene pointed to that being the case in the end.
10. Bill shoots Marnie and Eric rips her minion’s heart out.
Many of us were happy that this over-hyped villain met her end. If you’re anything like me, you might have been a little underwhelmed by Marnie’s presence at the end. It seemed as if they were trying way too hard hard to make her more bad ass than the original villain in the book. Many of us hated her but didn’t exactly love to hate her, like we love to hate Russell or Nan. Let’s face it, she caused problems for our favorite characters and got a little tiresome by end. That’s what it made it even more enjoyable to see the villain bite the dust at the hands of the two vampires. Once again, Eric is battle ready and shows his scary viking warrior face when he rids us of her minion, something many fans enjoy seeing.
6-10 for Talktrueblood:
6. Eric isn’t executed then Sookie and Eric have their first time in the woods and then the house.
7. Sookie tells Eric she always wanted him in front of Bill.
8. Eric crawls into bed with Sookie after his bad dream.
9. Sookie tries to protect Eric from Bill.
10. Sookie tells Bill that “every time [she] finds out something new about [him], [she] wishes [she] didn’t know it.”
I loved it when Sookie finally called Bill out on his lies. This shows that she finally recognizes Bill as being far from sainthood himself and that her initial attraction to him was a lie. It was exactly the thing that her character always neglected to do, even as she always called Eric out on his lies. She definitely had “bill-lover goggles.” However, we can see that she finally sees that she wants Bill to be something he was not. Meanwhile, she is lultimately embracing Eric in all of his glory because he was honest with her. It was just such a shame that she was willing to “forgive” him so soon after. SHAME-SHAME-SHAME on you writers!
5th Worst thing about Season 4:
Talktrueblood says: Bill orders Eric’s Execution and then get’s credit for saving his life
There were only two reasons for this scene: to remind the audience that Sookie still loves Bill and to remind the audience that Bill still loves Sookie (as if we needed that crammed down our throats and bashed into our heads until pieces of skull fell out)…ANYWAY…
BUT this spectacle actually served as a reminder to Bill fans and those that have no real loyalties, that their opinion of Bill ase a merciful, loving, and rational creature is valid (oh yeah , it also served as a reminder that Bill and Sookie are MEANT-to-BE ***Bill lover sticks a tongue out***).
*Cough-Cough* Bill lovers: Did Bill really have to condemn Eric to death in the first place? Doesn’t seem like he REALLY NEEDED TO and now he’s a savior because he didn’t kill his victim? OOOOOHK, WHATEVER.
Poll participants say: Pam gives up Eric to Bill
I always pictured Pam, and I believe rightly so, as being loyal to the death and willing to lay down her life down for her maker. After all, she was tough enough to face the Magister like she did. I know Eric was under amnesia and all, but I don’t think Eric’s mental illness should make love like that any different. Pam as a character is not only loyal to death when it comes to Eric in-my-opinion, she LOATHES BILL and KNOWS HE TRIED TO KILL THEM BEFORE. The NOT OUT-OF-CHARACTER PAM, would sooner have met the true death by being peeled apart by a Magister than give Eric up, especially to BILL! Pam giving up Eric to Bill was either a convenient plot device that disregarded the depth of Pam’s loyalty OR it was meant to suggest Pam is totally selfish, even when it comes to Eric (which makes no sense given her emotion toward Eric and if true, has made her a totally one-dimensional character on True Blood)….a total travesty either way.
4th Worst thing about Season 4:
Talktrueblood says: Sookie gets shot so Bill can give her blood
Another hated convenient plot device! The only reason that this happened was so Sookie could start thinking about Bill again (like she used to anyway) and give the audience another chance to be reminded that Bill is supposedly some kind-of hero. Apparently they ran out of ideas (although many fans with no writing experience certainly had some) and decided to speed things up a bit toward the full-blown love triangle…
Who needs a season or so for someone to get over a break-up naturally when we have Bill’s blood make her get over it in a few weeks? Oh yeah, we need a rescue to give him a reason to do it and then it’ll be ok too! COOL! …
Good news guys, we can now start the full blown love triangle (eh, square)- right now and exploit the fans for all they’re worth! DRAMA! (*rolls eyes*)
Poll participants say: Jason’s rape scene (that also goes basically unadressed)
Was it there to bring in the ratings (ew)? Was it there to make fun of Jason for taking sexual advantage of women? Was it there for the audience to get worked up about a storyline that wasn’t addressed again for the rest of the season, at all?
Nobody knows, all we know is this scene was pointless and awkward. Shame is, they could have done so much with Jason being raped. We could have seen a Jason changed by his experience and unwilling to have sex without a trusting, commited relationship that makes him feel safe and a Jason regretful about the past. However, all we got was a Jason ready to hop right on the Jessica train (which belonged to his buddy Hoyt no less) right away with no anxiety other than resisting the guilt it would cause him in regards to Hoyt. I know he had her blood and all, but wouldn’t some of his traumas outweigh that at all? It seems like they would at least a little, especially since we’ve come to figure out Jason is a big softie deep down.
3rd Worst thing about Season 4:
Talktrueblood says: Sookie’s threesome dream about Bill and Eric
The entire time I watched this scene, except for the beginning with Eric, I was thinking about throwing up the food I just ate. We all knew this was coming if we watched the spoilers, but it didn’t make it any less painful.
I know it’s a dream world and Sookie is coming into her sexuality (I thought she was already there after she jumped Bill bones immediately following her near-death at his hands), but this dream makes no sense in any way. Besides the improbability of Bill and Eric sharing her, we have Bill interrupting ladies-boners everywhere (and Eric doing the same thing to Bill lovers simultaneously) and men everywhere laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. How is this enjoyable to any viewers that care about what they’re watching? Eric lovers feel anything is ruined by Bill and vice versa and male viewers would frankly view Sookie as an indecisive slut who views men as toys (though I don’t view her that way, it is insulting to both male characters). This was obviously a ratings ploy and a way to set-up Alan Ball’s crash-course in expedited plots…how very trashy and lazy. I expect better out of those writers (at least I did before this season).
Poll participants say: Bill orders Eric’s Execution and then get’s credit for saving his life
2nd Worst thing about Season 4:
Talktrueblood says: The baby Mickey/ possessed doll story line
What a waste of Lafayette’s character, screen time, and all actors involved. Seriously? Arlene and Renee’s baby is supernatural too and see ghosts (really). Therefore, we get a plot about a ghost that comes back not only to face the death of her baby via Lafayette’s body, but also to make some commentary about the history of racial inequality in the South while she’s at it (Um ok,). Apparently this plot is so fascinating to Alan Ball and company, that they needed almost the entire season to let it play out too (a little anti-climatic if you ask me). BIGGEST WASTE OF TIME SINCE TAKING THE ENTIRETY OF SEASON TWO TO RESOLVE THE MARYANN PLOT…
I AM SO GLAD I DIDN’T WASTE ANY TIME THINKING ABOUT THIS ONE!
Poll participants say: Sookie gets shot so Bill can give her blood
WORST THINGS ABOUT SEASON 4:
Talktrueblood and Poll Participants say (tie in answers): THE ENTIRE COUCH SCENE and when Sookie tells Eric she loves Bill too.
It’s pretty much impossible to say enough about the couch scene and Sookie’s constant declaration that she loves Bill too. There are numerous things both sides of the fence wouldn’t like and even some casual viewers can see they don’t like this pathetic version of Eric. Why can’t Eric simply express his feelings and still hold his own at the same time? WHY????
The scene is treating Bill and Eric as equals and even despite the fact that I have clearly shown this is not the case. That is the most sickening thing about it to Eric fans.
How could this scene be a pleasure for anyone?
I think what AB actually did was attempt to choose ratings over the story.
He attempted to give every member of the love square hope. Sookie is alone now so she’s even free to have Alcide come running in and fill her void and play around with Bill while she’s at it.
She can spend the entire next season having her cake and eating it too. I wouldn’t be surprised if she slept with Alcide next season and Bill and Eric at this point .
She can flirt around with all three and so he thinks that will be enough to satisfy all the fans. The Bill fans are happy she forgave him and the Eric fans are happy she admitted she always wanted him and the Alcide fans are happy she’s not with either vampire anymore and she kinda semi-accepted his speech….
But maybe he forgot that when you try to please everybody you end up pleasing nobody.
Eric fans are not happy because she forgave Bill and went mushy on him after everything and of course totally cast his begging aside.
Bill fans are not happy because she fawned about wanting Eric from the start and how she can imagine life without Eric and Eric is going to constantly be a presence.
(neither are happy she was entertaining things with Alcide if even for a moment)
Alcide fans are not happy because she still expressed her undying love for the vampires and told him that she’s been there (basically saying she views his feelings as a total rebound).
This scene is a total mess and is not only uninteresting, but also completely vomit-inducing. I am all for female-power, but really it’s undermining female power while seeming to embrace it.
Everyone was out-of-character and it seemed like some writer’s misguided and dreadful fantasy brought to the screen. I am simply hoping that doesn’t mirror the rest of the show at this point.
6. Jason’s rape scene
7. Bill becomes King Bill
This makes no sense other than once again, being a convenient plot device. How can we be expected to believe that, in most circumstances, most of the vampire’s in Bill’s Kingdom would respect a vampire that is less than 200 years old? It seemed like it was simply there to keep Bill center-stage during this season and give the Bill fans something to get excited about.
8. Bill’s sad face appears during Eric and Sookie’s first time
I never imagined that Eric and Sookie’s first time would be anything but worth the wait after all that build-up. While nice and enjoyable, it was completely ruined by Bill’s sad-face popping into the frame. That’s all I think about when I think about this scene and that’s wrong after how long Eric fans waited. I never thought I would have to contend with Bill fans having a reason to like the scene (sitting there and feeling sorry for Bill with an actual visual aid of Bill being sad) and it made me absolutely angry after how long we waited! It was totally unfair that I had to sit there and hear the Bill fan next to me gloat that Bill was in the background and remind me that I should feel sorry for Bill (even after everything he did but did not pay for). It couldn’t even wait till after their scene together (for shame).
9. Pam gives up Eric
10. They tease Tara’s death even though you know she’ll be back next season.
C’MON: We know these characters are on contract and are not going anywhere: Sookie, Bill, Alcide, Jason, Jessica, Pam, Sam, Lafayette, and TARA (yes Tara)!
Therefore, teasing any of their deaths as a SEASON FINALE is pointless and lazy and doesn’t leave a lot of anticipation. We know Tara will be undead or a ghost if she “dies” at least.
If I am wrong, I guess I will take a big egg on my face but I doubt it.
6. Sookie’s threesome dream
7. Bill became King Bill
8. Bill’s sad face appears during Eric and Sookie’s first time
9. Pam and Sookie become enemies
As if we needed another reason to get annoyed with Sookie or see Pam as a one-dimensional character. As the books showed us, much can be gained from a Sookie and Pam friendship that builds up. However, it seems Alan Ball and company are going in the opposite direction for whatever stupid reason and I hope it’s not just to try to make Eric fans feel sorry for Pam and wish they’d never asked for their pairing (UGH) or show Pam is just that one-dimensional emotionless, selfish, and spoiled brat.
10. Bill and Eric improbably become friends and allies
HELLO? You two may be tied together by the knowledge of Sookie’s fairyhood, but you both know the other loves Sookie enough not to put her in danger because of it so there’s no need to make an alliance now. What about the fact that BILL WANTS ERIC DEAD? Are we supposed to believe Eric was so impressed with Queen Bill that he’s now a devoted subject full of forgiveness, admiration, and total trust and respect (aside from thinking he isn’t too love able). It seems that way, but it just isn’t believable and to me creates less drama than them remaining enemies but still being on the run. Maybe their supposed to bond over their mutual heartbreak (gag). I hope I find out Bill and Eric were just using each other, because if this is the precursor to a Bill-Sookie-Eric polyamorous relationship then I am definitely out for good.
Again, the writers have made the impossible happen because it’s convenient to whatever the plot is…..(I hope I can stop saying that when I critic the show next year but it seems unlikely).
Thank You for your participation! Results will be published along with my opinion later on!
(Again choose up to 12 of 30) I would like you to choose at least 5 but it’s not required.
THANK YOU for your participation! Results will be published along with my opinion later on.
(Again choose 10 of 25)
**My level of distaste for each of these aspects of the finale is rated on a scale of 1-5**
(2.5) Unemotional visits from the ghosts of loved ones:
I understand that Alan Ball was inserting his Buddhist viewpoint that “”Life is suffering and happiness is temporary,” so death is joyful compared to being tied to the harsh world. However how many viewers do you think are going to understand it or appreciate it even if they do? The souls of the dead seemed to be nothing but zombies to be manipulated by the living when need be. In addition, it felt as if they were high on drugs (smiling/joking the whole time or basically expressionless while they talked to their supposed love ones that they are now permanently separated from). To some audience members it seemed silly and to people like me it seemed to be such a waste of potentially emotional material.
BTW, why do there appear to be souls / individuals if Alan Ball is imparting a Buddhist viewpoint ( the Buddha did not believe in a self, a soul, or an Atman as Hindus call it); but I guess I can maybe give him a pass on that since some Buddhists try to philosophize that the concept of a soul is possible in Buddhism?
(2) Alcide makes his case to Sookie and she entertains the thought of choosing him
Ok, so I am a little mad about this scene but not completely since I was expecting it and know that Alcide was going to make a play for her after breaking things off with Debbie. Also, he isn’t Bill but that’s not saying very much. However, I still thought the scene made little sense.
First of all, Alcide barely knows Sookie and has just broken up with a lover he’s had in his life since childhood (no matter any of the bad things that have happened between them) and might-I-add was having a hard time getting over last season. Second of all, it made no sense that Sookie seems to be entertaining him as a prospect since she’s so head-over-heels for two vampires at once that she cannot bear to choose between them. I know he’s hot and all and she’s got a pull being a fairy and all but C’MON this makes no sense that they are on each other’s minds RIGHT NOW if she’s really that broken up about Bill and Eric (two vampires she dated and was intimate with) and he just ended things on a bad note once again with a woman he’s known since childhood. She doesn’t tell Alcide that his words have resonated with her a little but you can see it written all over her face as he walks away.
Also, how are Alcide fans even going to be satisfied with this scene for the reasons I specified above?
(3) Sookie screams for “Bill”after the stake is ignited and doesn’t say Eric at first.
I don’t understand why Sookie seems to constantly be more concerned about Bill. She supposedly loves them both equally but constantly seems to be more concerned about Bill (case-in-point: Sookie zapped Eric in order to save Bill without thinking about what it would do to him even though she did have many examples of it not actually killing anyone- so I am mixed about that scene). She summons her hands after calling out to Bill. Of course, the average audience member would think “Oh she loves Bill more,” even if that’s not really the case.
(1) Rene/Drew is suddenly a “good-guy” attempting to give Arlene helpful advice.
I wasn’t really angry about this of course but it was another annoyance that made no sense. I guess Rene/Drew was a murdering sociopath with a capacity to love Arlene enough to warn her about Terry’s past from the afterlife? In fact Rene was the only one who seemed to get emotional and caring at all. WHAT?
(5 -really 10 it sent me into a rage) The entire couch/ double-break-up scene!
WTF? Really, I don’t even know where to begin about this scene. Sookie is getting aroused from her double feeding and Eric as Bill are wearing matching pajamas (I guess in a way symbolizing their new-found sense of being connected and acceptance of their equal role in Sookie’s eyes and Sookie’s realization of their equal place in her eyes *VOMIT*).
Then, we have Sookie FORGIVING BILL COMPLETELY (despite it only being two weeks in her mind and Bill never asking for forgiveness or apologizing himself) AND THEN ASKING BILL FOR FORGIVENESS (for what I have no idea) as they give each other a tender stare-down!
Then we have Sookie attempting to tell Eric (after he reminds her that BILL HAD HIS CHANCE) that everyone’s misdeeds are equal so it’s all-cool for them to move on. In what universe are Bill’s misdeeds and wealth of lies equal to Eric’s and Sookie’s??? In what universe does Bill deserve to be forgiven yet you bring up what Eric did and don’t explicitly say you forgive him completely too???
In addition, we have Eric acting COMPLETELY OUT-OF-CHARACTER (like some 15 year old) as he says things like: “Bill’s cool with it” and begs for Sookie’s attention. REALLY??? All the while, Bill is there to witness the pathetic spectacle and act like the mature one standing aside, giving Sookie space, and “allowing” her to be with Eric.
We have Sookie proceeding to HUMILIATE both of them by making her love case for each of them in front of the other before leaving them both in the dust. I’ll never defend Bill but she even TELLS ERIC SHE WANTED HIM ALL ALONG IN FRONT OF BILL (of course I always knew that but what are you doing Sookie?). How is this suppose to be fufilling for either Eric or Bill fans or even Alcide fans? HOW?
There are no words to describe what a total FAIL this scene was! If I didn’t honestly believe that Bill was a terrible individual and had witnessed him attempting to kill Eric on multiple occasions, I would be rooting for Eric and Bill as a couple at this point over her with either of them!
(1.5) Predictable cliffhangers that were not a total tribute to the books
Thank you Alan Ball for the most predictable cliffhangers ever (they were predictable to anyone but the most typical and un-involved of fans)! You know, I would be fine with the Sookie killing Debbie thing (a sort-of kind-of book nod) if you had had Eric rescue her like in the books since it would be showing the books some respect for once…it would have at least made up a little bit for earlier.
(3) Tara gets killed off
I know I am in the minority when it comes to my love of Tara, but I was deeply saddened by this. Of course, it’s a supernatural show so they could bring her back somehow but it was a head-wound and I dont see how she can be turned in such a state. We could have Lafayette bring her back but what are the consequences of that? Plus, she has a head wound so what does that mean for her resurrected body? Maybe a vampire could heal her, but it looks as if she’s already gone. Only time can tell but if it turns out she’s really dead, I am going to be SAD AND MAD THEY KILLED HER OFF BEFORE ARLENE. I heard Rutina may have said something about Season 5 but where exactly are they going with this. If Bill heals her, I might just shit a brick…assuming I can watch next season without pulling my hairs out one-by-one!
I mainly see Tara coming back as some sort of ghost next season aiding Lafayette the medium. How lame would that be?
SOUND OFF BELOW!
Spoilers below of course!
Episode #48 – 4.12: ‘And When I Die’ – Season Finale. – It’s Samhain, Wicca’s greatest holy day, and spirits of the dead surface in Bon Temps, giving Sookie some valuable allies to combat Marnie’s newest incarnation. Lafayette’s latest medium encounter imperils his relationship with Jesus; Jason finds confession good for the soul, but not the body; Alcide makes a heartfelt appeal to the woman he loves; Terry receives an unexpected visitor at Merlotte’s; Sam and Luna envision a storybook ending, for once; Nan wears out her welcome with Bill and Eric. As Season Four comes to a shattering conclusion, Debbie confronts Sookie and Tara with deadly consequences, and the denizens of Bon Temps brace for a new crisis with a familiar face.
Never before has a True Blood season finale been so hard to figure out even by the worst spoiler sluts such as myself. But here I will attempt to dissect anything I have dug up and come up with an idea of how most of the episode might play out and include some good ol’ fashioned guessing:
(you may already know some of this or it’s obvious but bear with me, I take some guesses too so you might not have already thought of all of this or know it)
(most screen-caps courtesy of Skarsgardfans.com thank you!)
OK, so obviously we left off with Lafayette possessed by Marnie and Jesus feeling guilty about her death despite the fact it was necessary. Lafayette is still possessed by Marnie and Jesus finds out the hard way:
Sookie, thinking things have been taken care of with Marnie and finding out she wasn’t fired somehow, goes back to work. Alcide comes (as we saw in a episode clip) to tell her what happened with Debbie and convince her that it would be the best for both of them if they got together (just as Sookie said earlier. SO romantic I know HAHA). However, Sookie is too wrapped up in Bill and Eric right now and recognizes Alcide’s come-on as a desperate need for companionship no matter what was between them before (cause you know- every girl LOVES desperation and they just had SO much chemistry before LOL):
Meanwhile (as we saw in the other clip), Sam and Maxine mourn Tommy (I am sure Maxine wouldn’t if she knew he cheated her out of several thousand dollars but I digress…):
(Sam and Luna possibly have a love-fest afterwards and try to move on but you know something else is going to pop up and I see Tommy’s ghost and/or the Micken’s ghosts returning during the ghost resurrection)
Terry is at Merlotte’s and this character shows up: [PATRICK DEVINS] 35 to 45, tough, and ruggedly attractive, he served in the military with Terry, and they share a serious history: Terry saved Patrick’s life twice. SERIES REGULAR – NEXT SEASON – 7 OUT OF 13.
It’s actor Scott Foley playing Patrick Devins:
Either Jason confesses to Hoyt and then gets beat up after having a dream about Jessica/ making love to Jessica OR he makes love to Jessica/ has a dream about Jessica and then gets beat up confessing to Hoyt (I am pretty sure Hoyt is on the fast track to an FOTS membership or at least on the fast track to revenge against them and almost certainly back to his mother I THINK):
Despite the fact that Sookie and Alcide don’t get together, V-Head Debbie shows up to Sookie’s house to kill her but is discovered by Tara first (who recognizes her from the confrontation at Russell’s) who is potentially almost shot by Debbie first. Tara warns Sookie and Sookie kills Debbie (potentially Debbie as a wolf since we see a glow after Sookie shoots an individual or maybe Sookie’s glow hands go off- I don’t know):
Bill and/or Eric may help Sookie out with Debbie’s body if Tara doesn’t or isn’t there. Nan shows up to tell Bill that it’s ALL OVER for him and Eric (they have an order issued on their heads). Eric and Bill come together (once again despite everything) to get rid of Nan (not just to prevent their executions but to protect Sookie from Nan who knows about her). They take care of Nan or while they are attempting to take care of Nan and her human cronies, Lafayette possessed by Marnie shows up to exact revenge against them and gets rid of the Nan convoy in the process. Inside the possessed Lafayette, Marnie decides to burn them the way Antonia was burned and attempts to burn them in front of a helpless Sookie. However, the spirts of the dead (maybe other fairies show up too for some reason- I don’t know) such as Antonia help Sookie. Jesus may also help Lafayette break free from Marnie but ends up dying this time for it:
Somewhere in all of this, Pam has a fit in Eric’s office about his rejection of her and Ginger attempts to comfort her (unless Pam is also upset at feeling Eric’s pain later too). I still don’t think Pam is going to turn Ginger (though that would be a twist) but you can’t blame a girl for trying right?:
Out on the town for Halloween, Arlene definitely sees something (possibly some dead souls walking around):
Bill thanks Sookie for trying to help them (and/or Sookie and they say give each other a reluctant goodbye (or Bill turns her away though I don’t think this is likely) and she greives over their lost relationship/ mourns it:
(Alternative scenario- this is simply after Bill helps her with the body and before Nan shows up. Therefore, Sookie is crying outside the mansion because of the impending execution though I think it’s the former theory. I don’t think it’s the nightmare scenario that they kiss here and get back together SOME are dreaming of but I guess it’s possible.)
….If this happens, I believe Sookie will try to go to Eric as the cliffhanger or will remain single at least till next season LOL. Anyway, if the spoiler about her choosing between her vampire lovers is true, then I believe she will choose Eric after the rescue and a goodbye scene between her and Bill.
I believe that we will get a cliffhanger that shows Russell is about to return by seeing his open cement grave or some other clue but not by actually seeing Russell’s face. We will be shown that the missing Steve Newlin is either staging his own disappearance in preparation for their war or his protection OR the AVL/ Authority has him. We could see Hoyt checking out the FOTS (as I suggested). I believe its possible that Crystal or someone will go looking for Jason and the ghosts of Sam’s past will haunt him. Lafayette may discover a dead Jesus. If Tara knows of Debbie’s death, let’s see if she handles killing a human just as well or is suffering with guilt somehow despite the self-defense aspect. We could also see the AVL/ the Authority’s knowledge about Sookie even if Nan is taken care of as a cliffhanger. The fairies could show up again and there could be a question about that next season if they do (we did get Andy breeding with one of them).
I see next season being about the Authority versus the FOTS versus. Russell. Each side will want to use Sookie as a weapon or a bargaining chip and drag various citizens of Bon Temps into their respective traps (by their will or against it).
That was my best shot! 🙂
