Possible Foreshadowing or Symbolism in True Blood Season 3

1. Pearls can represent and “unblemished nature,” or “innocence.” Sookie wearing this at the beginning could symbolize a transformation of her nature this season, from a innocent girl to a dark woman. I will be curious to see jewelry that Sookie might be wearing during the finale or very late in the season, if any.
2. Pearls can be considered magical. Maybe this pertains to the discovery of her own magic or the theories people had about the magic behind the purple dress.
3.Pearls can represent someone that is highly regarded for the value they hold. This could desribe Sookie becaus of her heritage and powers, but especially after Eric’s revelation, “your life is too valuable to throw away.”

This could have foreshadowed Coot’s death by gun fire.

The eagle represent's Jason's free but dominant and protective personality.

Sookie will remain stubborn with Eric until they are both in immediate danger again.

Eric will protect Sookie again later on and/or they will have a passionate, primal moment

Eric's need for vengeance will almost be his end. Godric/a vision of Godric will save him.

Sookie may pay the price because of Bill or his stubborness

Bill is not the man/vampire she was looking for.

Sookie must embrace her dark side to survive.

The all wear black, symbolizing the darkness they all are. They also all have the innocent blood of Ann and countless others on their hands. Tara saw the true Bill without a mask here.

Eric often embraces his dark side outwardly and keeps his light/color underneath (dark jacket, colored shirt underneath)

Debbie will keep coming after you (she threatened to cut you but you cut her, maybe she will return the favor)

Normal people often settle down. Sookie and others are not normal.

Alcide's pack is running away from their problems. Is a new leader needed? (Alcide)

Bill is a liar.

Sookie will never be completely Bill's again.

Daylilies are a symbol of maternity...hmmm

maybe Eric should listen to Russell's advice now like he did then.

"It's too late for me." Yes it is Bill.

"I wouldn't let go of this one...it's quite valuable." ( No you wouldn't Eric. Yes, she is in more ways than one ; )

"There's no forever for us." No there isn't. Notice how their the location of their first encounter is similar to Bill and Sookie's..hmmm

"you mean nothing to me" wow, that was believable! not. can we assume the opposite? ha

Jessica will continue to justify her bad behavior in a similar way Bill does.

Satan in a Sunday hat? Probably so.

Fireplaces symbolize: a symbol of home. Will this become Sookie's home one day or will he attempt to make it so?

"Your a fucking idiot!" Yeah, pretty much.

there is no difference between you two. he will probably even end up like you too. maybe he is also part supe too, who knows? ; )

"you wouldn't know love" yeah, maybe you don't either Sookie. YET

there is a reason you kept Hadley around. there is a reason everyone is wearing white.

Did Russell essentially "cut his own head off" by cutting the magister's head off?

There is light and the grass is greener on the other side when you listen to Tara.

This relationship is choking the life out of both of you.

Look at that gun! your relationship leaves a path of destruction and is as volatile as that loaded gun

This chess piece Eric used to win the chess game could possibly be in the image of a fairy and/or  goddess and it is probably not a coincidence. Will Eric win the battle with Sookie in his corner or does this simply mean the viking will prevail, even at a cost of the queen? My friend Renne has a good theory over at her blog the ancient pythoness about what the chess game and what it represents http://www.ancientpythoness.com/2010/08/13/checkmate/

I love reading your thoughts. Excellent!

Thank you Leah. I love chatting with you on here and the boards too!

    Love your thoughts TTB 🙂
I’m going to check on the jewellry Sookie wears in the future.
I’m hoping for the passionate primal moment 😉 Lets see about that!
Well if the dreams are shared or they share the feelings in the dreams, Eric might be the one she’s been looking for!
‘you mean nothing to me’ yeah right!
Jessica will probably mirror Bill more and more if she has no intervention from better vamps 😦
Sookies relationship leaves nothing but destruction trail!
The white ‘fairy’ queen on the chessboard has some meaning I’m sure!

    • #4 by talktrueblood on August 11, 2010 - 6:22 pm

Thanks Missy, you know I always love your comments too.
I think Eric gives her everything Bill does but better and with the respect she deserves.
I loved that skarsgard/the writers made it obvious Eric was trying to protect her from Russell.
I am worried about how him knowing she is fairy will come into play.
Jessica is trying to mirror her maker because she thinks that is the thing to do.
I think it was shown that even Pam would have been a better maker.
The destruction of her home (her life) is one of the most symbolic things (a loaded gun).
I hope/think i am right about the chess board analogy.

Eric sacrifices his queen in that game of chess for the checkmate.

    • #6 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 2:58 am

I guess an alternative meaning be that he will sacrifice Sophie-Ann, Russell, or Sookie…I hope not Sookie? Could it be himself since the queen is the most powerful piece and he is the most valuable player right now?

      • #7 by X-Ray on August 13, 2010 - 11:02 pm

I thought the implication was that he had ALREADY sacrificed his own queen. I don’t see Eric necessarily sacrificing Sookie.
Eric is pulling out all the stops as far as getting rid of Russel goes, though so who the hell knows.

      • #8 by talktrueblood on August 13, 2010 - 11:07 pm

Yes, or that he would do it again but that is true that he already did in a way.
Eric did stick his neck out to try to keep Russell from Sookie.

It was just a negative idea on my part : /
considering where AB sometimes takes thing.

    • #9 by Renée on August 15, 2010 - 3:14 pm

Right X-ray. Eric sacrificed his queen in the game and that was also the first thing he did to show his loyalty to RE. In Talbot’s chess set the queen is Aphrodite, and SA is identified with that goddess because Bill and Sookie are Cupid and Psyche. Remember Sookie’s very first nightshirt? SA is the ill tempered goddess of love (carnal pleasure) whose machinations backfire and lead to a relationship between Cupid and Psyche.

Eric checkmates with a bishop, in this case Asclepius, the healer.

      • #10 by talktrueblood on August 15, 2010 - 5:44 pm

Does anything tie into Sookie’s relationship with Eric or the negativity with her relationship with Bill…besides the way it was thrown together by Aphrodite?

I am up on greek philosophy but not on greek mythology so much…

  4. #11 by Osterby on August 11, 2010 - 11:06 pm

I noticed in the last ep that Tara just might be a lil preggers. In the screen cap above when Sookie and Tara are in Sookie’s front yard her hand is resting on her tummy….and when she walks away from Sookie, is that a bump I see? I have a sick feeling we are not done with the MA story line.

    • #12 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 1:40 am

It could be Sam, that was several weeks ago and she might be getting suspicious like 6-8 weeks later.

    • #13 by Lena on August 12, 2010 - 2:54 am

Osterby, I noticed that exact thing too. When a woman is pregnant, sometimes she puts her hand on the belly. Plus, nothing is TB hapeens for no reason, right?

      • #14 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 3:00 am

Right. If she is pregnant, it could be Eggs (Renee had a theory concerning a pregnancy by Eggs), but if she is going to notice anytime soon, I think it could more than likely Sam…but then again that might not be brought up till later on.

      • #15 by LLE on August 12, 2010 - 11:31 pm

Tara could be pregnant by Sam not Eggs. Eggs is not important character for Tara to get pregnant at all.

      • #16 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 11:54 pm

I agree and I think it would be a way to bring them together in the end too and I think the audience would be far more intrigued by a Sam pregnancy and it could have major implications for Sam’s character too, so it could tie in 2 story lines. Tommy could get in the way of things between them too.

  5. #17 by Marie Rollande on August 12, 2010 - 2:39 pm

What an interesting post! Pregnant by Sam sure has a certain appeal, if Tara does have a muffin in the oven…

I’m so enjoying reading your blog & the ones that directed me to it (AP, SVB, TBU). Your approach to unraveling TB, as I still unravel Eliot’s”The Wasteland”, is so fascinating (“Those are pearls that were his eyes”). BTW, Viv/Tom Eliot’s relationship is food for thought vis-a-vis Sookie/Bill; lots of unsettling parallels there.

    • #18 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 5:05 pm

Well I like Sam/Tara so it may be wishful thinking on my part…haha

Thank you. I am a poet myself so that is a very interesting reference to me.

  6. #19 by theagnosticswife on August 12, 2010 - 10:19 pm

I love reading your thought provoking posts! I’m a Sookie/Eric gal too, so I really do hope Eric turns up the hero here.

    • #20 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 11:47 pm

      Thank you so much!
He already is a hero but he is a silent one that often doesn’t get the credit he deserves, but I think that he will we all is said and done and as we go along.

  7. #21 by Marie Rollande on August 12, 2010 - 11:44 pm

You’re welcome. I too like the paring of Tara & Sam a lot, always have. Luck would have it, no poet here; those who have that gift are truly blessed by the gods. I’m primarily an essayist, but I do love reading & dissecting poetry.

Really like your use of all the visuals from TB to illustrate the post theme- they fit beautifully. This ep in particular was so filled with foreshadowing- amidst all the rushing from one plotline to the next, that is ;->

Of course the “eyes turned to pearls” line came from The Tempest originally, but Wasteland’s using it in the context of a clairvoyante reading Tarot cards suits TB, don’t you think?
    “Here, said she,
Is your card, the drowned Phoenician Sailor,
(Those are pearls that were his eyes. Look!)
Here is Belladonna, the Lady of the Rocks,
    The lady of situations…”

The reading goes on to warn, “Fear death by water.”

    • #22 by talktrueblood on August 12, 2010 - 11:51 pm

I am hoping for some Tara/Sam action this season or at least something romantic with them if we don’t get a lot of E/S this season.

Very nice examples that I had never considered before.
Maybe you should be a guest poster or something ; )
But seriously love your use of the poem to create parallels.

      • #23 by Renée on August 15, 2010 - 2:40 pm

I was nice seeing Sam comfort Tara and warn Tommy away. I cannot believe that if Tara is pregnant, it is Sam’s baby though. Maryann’s whole deal was based on the fertility of Tara and Eggs. She would have known if Tara was already pregnant.

      • #24 by talktrueblood on August 15, 2010 - 5:41 pm

True. I am wondering about that myself…
I am wondering whether there will be a drama about whose child it is…
only to find out it’s egg’s baby and to wonder how the significance of that.
Surely Maryann would have known, but who knows. I wonder if she knew about Arlene too (not that she would have necessarily cared about that.

  8. #25 by Marie Rollande on August 12, 2010 - 11:48 pm

“pairing” of Tara & Sam. Wouldn’t want to pare their relationship down any more than AB has already done!

  9. #27 by Enjoying on August 15, 2010 - 10:17 pm

Yes I do think Tara is PG and it may be Sam cause when she and Eggs got together was only two to three days after Sam

    • #28 by talktrueblood on August 15, 2010 - 11:40 pm

yepp. I mean she was having sex with Sam up until she ended up in jail…so no way she would know for sure who the dad was until it was born obviously…
I think it would be more interesting if it was Sam’s because it could be a shifter and he would have to tell her about it.

Maryann might also have been drawn to her because her connection with Sam, not just the exorcism.
I think she tried to isolate Tara from Sam for that very reason other than trying to isolate Sam himself.

“Eric’s need for vengeance will almost be his end. Godric/a vision of Godric will save him.”
Just one of the things you got right, though Eric didn’t listen to all Godric had to say unfortunately.

    • #30 by talktrueblood on September 14, 2010 - 1:38 am

thanks anna. i guess i kinda expected it to happen that way, just in a different way.
