Sookie Sleep Signals:Dream Symbolism on True Blood

I will discuss the meaning/ideas in Sookie’s dreams through dream symbolism. Though the subject(s) may or may not be in the exact same state during a dream (Tara was clothed and sleeping in bed during hr dream, not naked in the shower and Sam was not initially clothed or looking up phone numbers in his Bill dream for example), I think the clothing worn or not worn in the dream  is relevant to the overall sequence of events in the dream. Since we have been shown the time of day can be incorrect as well (Sam was dreaming of Bill in a nighttime setting obviously but it was actually daytime), the surroundings are also relevant to the sequence of events in the dream though the dreams obviously create some kind of awareness between the subjects.

Bill and Sookie Dream One:

Sookie looking through the window represents her need for insight into a situation...

...and it is Bill...as she is looking down on him

Sookie wears a pink shirt with angels. She throws on the white bathrobe before approaching Bill and then strips it down for him when asking about sex with him.

(The pink shirt can represent Sookie’s attraction to Bill or the pink can represent Sookie’s true passionate and kind personality. Why does she initially cover herself with the white robe? It was a warm month, no? She is embracing her “pure” persona for Bill and a bathrobe can represent her need to deal with the situation with Bill somehow and she decides to deal with it by shedding the “purity persona” and asking for sex (usually how Bill and Sookie end up dealing with situations later on too). The angels can represent important messages she needs to see/realize and/or it  can herald a warning. Warning? about Bill? possibly? Does this represent Claudine watching after her, a guardian angel of sorts, brining this message to her or what Sookie could become as a fairy? Also the darkness of the dream can represent Bill as a dark figure/influence in her life. Being in your yard (as Sookie is) when it’s dark can represent BAD/AGGRESSIVE influences creeping into your life and you should avoid making any drastic choices. Hmmmm?)

Bill, in turn, sheds his pure (white shirt) Southern gentlemen persona.

...and reveals his true aggressive nature/ lust for her blood rather than sex or who she is (which she reveals with the dropped robe).

Due to the fact that  we have noticed the sequence of events and the timeline is often out of whack, Eric might have actually been correct when he suggested Sookie received Bill’s blood the “night they met,” somehow and this dream could have in fact been after she had taken his blood somehow. However, even if it was not, I see this dream as a warning more than anything else that could have come from Claudine or her own fairy subconcious.

Bill and Sookie Dream Two:

Though this can be considered a fantasy because we see Sookie masturbating at the end, I still believe it must hold some meaning like Eric’s fantasy obviously did.

Once again, Sookie is in her "pure persona" as she approaches Bill for sex and allows it to be stripped. A nightgown can signal an approaching illness. This makes no sense (so therefore this symbolism of the nightgown may not apply) unless you consider her relationship with Bill an approaching illness in her life.

Bill is in a darker (dirtier/brownish) shirt in his DARK house. Sookie decides to accept his darkness/flaws with a kiss (for what she thinks they are right now).

Being kissed in general can represent an important message as well or that someone INSIDE or outside of the dream may be hiding something from you AND kissing someone you are mad at/supposedly mad at represents an unconcious reconciliation with that person.

Eric and Dream One:

First of all, notice that the contrast  from her laying next to Bill to the dream with Eric (through the softer lighting…the pink/gold undertones  in the sheets are highlighted in the dream with Eric, the sheets also appear much more silky in the dream with Eric, Sookie and Bill are covered and Sookie and Eric are uncovered). Obviously, the improved lighting represents coming from the darkness of Bill into the light with Eric.

Sheets can represent romantic relationships.  The pink undertones represent the passionate and kind side of Sookie (which was represented by the pink shirt in the Bill dream) and possibly the passionate and kind side of Eric too coming out between them.  Silk and gold coloring are lucky omens as well and connect with the sheet symbolism of a future romantic relationship. Their tans, that is emphasized on Sookie and suddenly appearing on Eric (connected with light of course) represent health both mentally and physically in a future relationship (not Eric’s human side that will/may appear in the future as some have suggested). The messy sheets/non-existant cover on the Eric bed either represent the freedom and naturalness with Eric and/or represent the current complexities of their relationship (afterall, he has just tricked her into taking his blood) or that the complexities between them will in fact actually bring them together in the end.

Dreaming of a kiss on the hand represents respect and tenderness.

Beiing watched while making out/having sex can represent guilt about your feelings. (here it also represents the nosiness of Lorena and the reality of Bill in the background and her guilt connects with that). Of course, Lorena/Bill are in darkness/dark influences.

A kiss on the neck represents growth and maturity as well as a realization of feelings.

Being kissed in general can represent an important message as well or that someone inside or outside of the dream may be hiding something from you AND kissing someone you are mad at/supposedly mad at represents an unconcious reconciliation with that person.

Eric and Sookie Dream Two:

The lamps contrast the darkness (Sookie is the light in Eric’s grief/could be the light).

Walking through a hallway can represent growth/maturity and/or frustration (possibly with her growing feelings for Eric). In the traditional Freudian sense it is a sexual symbol of the vagina.

Going to someone’s bedroom in general can represent growing romantic feelings for that person and/or the importance of that person in your life and/or feelings that you keep private or hidden about that person. Seeing someone crying is either a straightforward representation of your sympathy/feelings for that person or it can also represent the possibility of having to help that person in the future.

A kiss on the cheek represents a growing trust and friendship with that person.

Grabbing someone's hand represents a fear of losing that person from your life and a need to develop a deep connection with that person.

Eric exposes his true self as well but even though he bites her she offers it to him and there is nothing aggrsessive about it as it was with Bill.

For the third time, Being kissed in general can represent an important message as well or that someone inside or outside of the dream may be hiding something from you AND kissing someone you are mad at/supposedly mad at represents an unconcious reconciliation with that person.

Eric and Sookie Dream Three:

A fan represents a need to improve your self esteem so that you can deal with new things/realizations in your life and it can also be an emotional storm coming and a need to stay calm. (we see this despite an air conditioning system clearly in the background).

Clean shoes represent potential positive influences in your life. However, inappropriately wearing them (like on furniture in this instance) indicate that you are headed in the wrong direction at the moment and need to see positive influences in your life.

Once again, A kiss on the neck represents growth and maturity as well as a realization of feelings.

For the fourth time, Being kissed in general can represent an important message as well or that someone inside or outside of the dream may be hiding something from you AND kissing someone you are mad at/supposedly mad at represents an unconcious reconciliation with that person.

The sleep signals pointed to the progression of Sookie, Bill, Eric and the plot in general all along. Seems pretty clear, at least to me, that the sleep signals are pointing to Eric as the better choice/ the choice she should make and the more trustworthy of the two and it is also pointing to a true friendship with Eric that is missing with Bill.

Thank you for the compliment Bobsgran. I always enjoy your comments here, on TBU, and the AP. You always have something intelligent to say.
I am glad you enjoyed it.
Dream Analysis, Body Language, and Psychology are very interesting to me.

    hi, nice job 😉

My observation are sometimes different, maybe because of being from different culture, but:

    – no sheets in first one dream with Eric (my fav by the way) in my opinion suggest being open, no sheets no lies, nothing to hide.
    – kiss but without fangs, in first dream Eric not drop a fangs even for second, in my opinion it shows his more care and romantic side, and shows that he is interested in her, not her blood
    – talking about love, turning her, and how they now know their true face (sense of humor, deep and in love) shows to me, that even in erotic dream Sookie is more intrigued in relationship, deep connection, building some kind of bond than in sex.
    – they touching themselves a lot, it is calm and romantic, shows there’ll be no place for violence in their relationship
    – kissing hands, it’s sign of respect and being close, trust to each other (the same: kissing in neck: in animal world it is sign of trust and being friendly, dogs shows in that way heir not afraid, not aggressive)
    – There is a lot of eye contact, very close, so in mean they have nothing to hide and try to be close and deep
    – even in dreams with Eric Sookie put a little bit of sense of humor, so typical for Eric, so not to seen in Bill
    – Lorena could be personification of Bill’s influences control freak just like he is, as Sookie sees how big Lorena had impact on Bill, she could be afraid, that Bill will have so big impact on her,
also: mouth said one thing (I love Bill) body done another (oh, yes, we know what 😉 ) so her mind is still on Bill, but her heart and body is on Eric: listen to your Gran Sookie, she told you to follow yours heart
    – even in dreams she knows him better and he knows her better: their talking about future, their talking about feelings, they had time to get to known each other before the lust come (opposite to Bill’s and Sookie’s relationship)

    The 2 dream:
Long hall could means also long way to find true love but the lights are like signs, showing were she should go, just like those lights on airport, don’t know how it’s in english

Sookies dream are more close “to life” than others: she walk in the same dress she wear (Clothes could be also Alan Ball trick to show what we want to see, when I’ve seen ep 10 season 2 I was really sure it was no dream, but Sookie after Godric death went to Eric, to tell him, that she been there for his friend), find Eric in bed where she sleeps, meets him on a Jason’s couch: as he was more connected with her, or.. she invited him by thinking of him: in hotel during meeting with Nan she was staring at Eric, why? What she was thinking? Only “poor Eric, I;m so sorry for him” or “Who is he, I never known him from that side, I’m intrigued by him, he surprised me, it’s not often quality between vampire (to use his own words)”.
Helping him to mourning after Godric death in second dreams show that she really care for him, want to be his companion in good and worst.
He shows her fangs, but not make any violent move, wait for her reaction: she touched fangs, so she accept who he is completely, she invite him to bite her, he does, but we haven’t seen any blood: ACTUALLY we didn’t see her blood in none of her dreams, only blood was Eric’s tears, so there is no violence, nothing against her will.

In 3 one is more than fun: she knows that it is a dream, and what he is saying? Have some joy of it, and what? She does 😉

      Hey Anette : )
I think you made a lot of good observations of your own.
I tried to avoid the body language aspects themselves and mostly talk about how dream symbolism would interpret it since I did discuss the body language in the dreams a little bit before and I didn’t want to be too repetitive and I wanted to stay on topic.

Although I did enjoy reading what you said.

I did say that the open sheets could have meant freedom in their relationship as well, which I love that you think that is the more likely of the choices.
Well it’s hard to uses dream symbolism to discuss Eric’s vampirism since that is who he is and has nothing to do with dream symbolism
BUT I completely agree with you.
I tried not to discuss dialogue but I completely agree with that as well.
I completely agree with the contrast in the way they touch eachother, especially sexually and the body language in dream one with Eric.
I agree that the clothes mean many things but since nothing is an accident with AB I figured they must connect with the dreams.

HAHAH yes. that was the best part. Sookie enjoyed it, knowing it was a dream haha

Hej, I just watched and wrote what I have seen 😉
I’m academic, working on my Phd. on literature, so I have maybe different way of seeing: everything is a part of something, just have to bite it and understand (and I like to bite, Eric especially 😉 ) 😉 I really like watching films or read books and just try to find some truth beneath. It is like my exercise form my work 😉
Happy you like it, I really like to comment on yours blog, hope not boring you with my “elaborates” 😉

      • #10 by talktrueblood on October 5, 2010 - 2:12 pm

Oh you must be very smart. These blogs do get intelligent people.
I am thinking of getting my masters in creative writing/english.

You and the AP will probably be better at the pop culture references than me and I like to read your thoughts and her thoughts.

Please come by and comment ANYTIME. I do love the discussion.

  5. #11 by anna on October 3, 2010 - 12:00 pm

Great post! Dream states can be very illuminating.
I really like your interpretations too Anette, different cultural approaches are really good for other level of meanings.

    • #12 by talktrueblood on October 3, 2010 - 8:33 pm

Thanks for reading Anna and yes, they certainly can.
I tried to stick to the symbolism (topic) itself since I had gone into some of the body language itself before though but
I did like her ideas…most certainly. The comments section is open to all kinds of discussion and I love it.

      • #13 by anna on October 3, 2010 - 9:21 pm

Got a bit off topic myself & temporarily forgot all the brilliant body language analysis that you’ve done that I like so much.

      • #14 by talktrueblood on October 3, 2010 - 11:01 pm

It’s free game in the comments section! I enjoy anything anybody wants to discuss with me or othrs…
but I was explaining why I might have not covered every point of the dreams…because I was focusing in on dream symbolism itself…
and trying to stay clear of tendency to cover Body Language and thinks more in terms of symbolism

TTB, This is totally off topic, but I have to answer your very polite comment, well, maybe I’m smart, propably I am, but in Polish, not English – I still have vocabluary of 15 year old boy, fan of comic books and tv shows 😉 So, thanks to you, I’m learning.
Creative writings is great choice, in Poland they aren’t so popular, only courses, not full programs, I would love to go on studies like this 😉 You are smart and bright person, with interesting way of thinking and deep knowledge of human behave and body language, you are able to understand code of human interaction: that’s very important for writers, so good luck!

      Anette:
Your english is very good. I am sure I sound worse when I speak my second language, spanish.
I can be a professor in the subject as well as submit work and teach english literature.

Thank you Anette. you are way too kind.

I’ve always thought that these dreams are more than just dreams, they are “lucid dreams” that happen when one is not really asleep, but on another plane of existence… the “in-between” awakeness and sleep. It happens the same for Eric in his “down time.” This allows them the ability to share dreams or to meet on another plane of existence similar to an out-of-body experience. Sookie is truly his light in the darkness. They are each other’s “Christ figure,” each other’s savior. Eric has long been considered the Christ figure of the SVM series, and he obviously sees Sookie as his savior- to make his long-dead heart beat again through true love. *sigh*

    • #19 by talktrueblood on October 8, 2010 - 7:44 pm

Nothing is an accident in true blood either.
      Alan Ball said so himself.
Oh yes, Eric is definitely turning into a christ figure. It is interesting to think of Sookie as one when it comes to Eric.

    • #20 by Missy on October 18, 2010 - 10:34 pm

Totally agree with you on this one. I think the dreams are shared between Eric and Sookie. I like your analysis of the ‘in-between awakeness and sleep’

  9. #22 by anette on October 10, 2010 - 5:52 am

hej, I was talking about TB with my hubby, and we noticed one interesting thin, there is almost none nonpatological or non disfunctional family in TB world… even when ther is some love and goodness in some famielies, like Sookie’s and Gran relation, there must me violent end, or some lie beneath.Maybe you could make some post? I’m miss for some more of your great writings 😉

    • #23 by sunnynala on October 10, 2010 - 4:24 pm

Eric and Pam are the most functional family on True Blood!

TTB, love your dream analysis. Sookie should have listened to herself when she dreamed of Bill being disinterested in sex but all about the BLOOD.

      • #24 by Glamour Freaks on October 11, 2010 - 7:33 am

That is so dead on how the dream in the begining of the show played out (Bill just wanting the blood)! A.B. is an amazing story teller!! Thanks for writing about the dreams it’s so interesting:)

      • #25 by talktrueblood on October 13, 2010 - 5:10 am

        Thank you so much Sunnynala!
I wish I had seen it myself the first time!

    • #26 by talktrueblood on October 13, 2010 - 5:11 am

I am doing a psychological analysis of Bill first. My internet was broken for the last week so that is why I have been late responding.

I could do an analysis of True Blood families.

  10. #27 by Glamour Freaks on October 11, 2010 - 7:30 am

I’m almost posative Sookie had that first dream of Bill where she offers herself to him after he had given her his blood. Love the new stuff you’re writing about!!
    I miss Eric:(

    • #28 by talktrueblood on October 13, 2010 - 5:13 am

Thank you Glamour freaks.Yes, I think it’s a timeline thing that Sunnynala and the Ancient Pythoness have discussed extensively.

  11. #29 by Hime on October 12, 2010 - 10:10 pm

Another great post, very interesting. The differences between the dreams about Bill and those about Eric are very clear though hidden under symbolism.
Compared to E/S dreams, B/S ones are so dark and there is a feeling of danger and insecurity. I also noticed that B/S dreams are about sex and not in a good way, like it was Sookie’s subconscious telling her that the moment to lose her virginity has come and she can’t escape from that.
Good catch on the robe and the pink shirt, I didn’t notice. The white robe certainly syimbolizes Sookie’s innocence and purity, which she chooses to drop off to run into Bill’s arms.

    • #30 by talktrueblood on October 13, 2010 - 5:17 am

      Thanks Hime.
And…Notice how the only light in the Bill/Sam dream was coming from the bathroom and a dim lamp…hmmm.
I think it was time for Sookie to loose her innocence in general for sure and dealing with Bill sure would do that haha

  12. #31 by Missy on October 18, 2010 - 10:24 pm

Hey TTB, I totally missed this post, doh!!!! I love it 🙂 I have always had great interest in these dreams between S/E and S/B. Like someone said above, Sookie and Eric are the lights in each others life, they just need to realise it. There is always light in their dreams and in their scenes together.
Bill has always been projected with darkness and dark colored clothes. He wore a white shirt in the first dream but when he shed that, it was like wolf shedding the white wool. Sookie saw the real Bill in that dream, the bloodlust monster, but just didn’t recognise it as a warning.
Thank you Kat for an amazing post!!!
