“Transformation.”–Episode 4×02 “You Smell Like Dinner” Recap

As an episode of TRANSFORMATIONS, it opens up with Jason unaware of his literal TRANSFORMATION that is about to occur.

Eric points out Sookie’s ongoing TRANSFORMATION from being dominated by her human side to being dominated by her supernatural fairy side.  She may not have wanted this TRANSFORMATION anymore than Jason wanted his, but they will both have to go through it to survive.

Yet the supernatural TRANSFORMATIONS that aided their survival (like Jessica’s own Vampiric TRANSFORMATION) may in fact cause their demise in this new world; Hoyt must TRANSFORM as well to survive inside Jessica’s world. Even Pam realizes the ways vampires must TRANSFORM as well inside this new world.

Sam tries to convince Luna to TRANSFORM herself into a more open individual because his love awaits her when she does; this is ironic that they have this conversation while both naked (symbolically representing openness of course).

Jesus helps Lafayette begin to realize his TRANSFORMATION into a witch.

Bill’s TRANSFORMATION to womanizing King becomes apparant to Sookie and the audience through her point-of-view).

(even though we are later shown what steps Bill went through to find his TRANSFORMATION to King…he didn’t go from procurer to King, he went from carefree hunter to spy to womanizing King…yet another secret to hold from her)

However, Sookie doesn’t need any more information because her own TRANSFORMATION into the strong fairy is arriving as she tells Bill off.

Meanwhile, Arlene’s life has TRANSFORMED from the supernatural-free life she once prided herself on (and she probably only has herself to blame). Did she even TRANSFORM her own child or her own life herself in the Wiccan ritual (and bloodied her own vision for the perfect life)? As Queen Sophie-Ann said, everything that exists imagined itself into existence. Combined with a Wiccan ritual, it is safe to assume that Arlene created this TRANSFORMATION herself.

Sam begins TRANSFORMING his anger into acceptance as Luna begins TRANSFORMING into the open person Sam requested.

Andy continues his TRANSFORMATION into a dirty cop and a V addict (missing Jason’s cries for help in the process).

Sookie witnesses Tara’s TRANSFORMATION and also begins to see how Eric is TRANSFORMING her life, even though she only sees the negatives and none of the positives right now .

Jessica continues trying to TRANSFORM into a wife for Hoyt but literally changes her path.

Lafayette finally accepts his TRANSFORMATION into a witch when he opens up to Tara.

Eric must accept the TRANSFORMATION of Bill’s role in his life, even if he does it sarcastically.

Bill looks upon his TRANSFORMATION into wealth and status, but its empty as he stares into it…………………alone.

Pam doesn’t want to TRANSFORM into Sookie’s friend but she encourages Sookie to accept the TRANSFORMATION of Eric’s role in her life, the same way that she gladly did.

After changing paths, Jessica literally “lets her hair down,” and TRANSFORMS into the sexy, blood-thirsty hunter she really is.

Luna finally TRANSFORMS into the open individual Sam wanted her to be. She then describes how she TRANSFORMS into a her mother and therefore, a shifter that can turn into humans.

Jessica reveals that Sookie never TRANSFORMED into her stepmother and doesn’t hide her new TRANSFORMATION to Sookie.

Sam finally completes his TRANSFORMATION of his anger into acceptance.

After Marnie TRANSFORMS into a possessed witch…

Eric begins his TRANSFORMATION into Amnesia-Eric, the condemned vampire in both body and soul that Marnie’s spell forced upon him.

AND…..We come full circle in the episode of TRANFORMATION as Jason begins his TRANSFORMATION into a were-panther….

First! Great article — I’ve seen the episode but I was incapacitated really to understand its full meaning but I am going to do a rewatch and then post a more detailed reaction. Either way, keep the great work up, and I’ll keep my eyes open specifically for the transformations.

Great article K :)….I thought the same thing when I saw Bill look at all his fancy things…he was still empty inside, even if professionally (so to speak) he has never been higher.

Excelent! I like how you relate everything! Some things I could never have think of 🙂
Did you hear the “spell” Marnie casts on Eric? It´s an exorcism ! poor Eric he´s been treated as a demon! I didn´t agree too much with that….I would prefered some celtic stuff…

    • #8 by Kat on July 6, 2011 - 4:40 pm

Thank you! That’s my goal with the recap.

I understand the godric thing we saw in the promo….his soul was damned in that.

  5. #9 by Anette on July 6, 2011 - 6:25 pm

It makes sense… in my novel to create a vampire his father had to share his essence with his progeniture, think simmilar is in ChH books, Eric posses part of Godric even after his true death, but it doesn’t mean he is possesed and need an exorcisme, what a stupid idea, especially for a viccan witch… unleass she as herself was possesed by some demon, something from christian system… I read lot about vicca and other pogan cults, never found suggestion they could use latin exorcisms, it doesn’t fit for me… so why? And let me use my imagination and just spit some theories, just to mess with our’s minds 😉
Maybe it was something from ERIC past? He told Bill that he was hunging around in Europe during inqvisition and in season 2 we get noticed he know some stuff about magic… he is extremly strong even for a 1000 year old vamp, look at Russel, he was so much older tha Eric, but I haven’t notice if he was so much stronger than my viking (I like how it sounds – my viking ;)),
and as you noticed – Eric’s blood opened something in Sookie’s powers, so maybe he has some little tinny winny secret (in fact I don’t belive that anything connected with that man is tinny, but it was just metaphore)?
Gods from scandinavian mythology was simmilar to geeks, they walk between humans… Have even children with humans, and those children was often a begginer of royal line, As for example (I’m not sure how it would be in English, my dictionary isn;t prepare for discution about scandinavian myths ;))
And so, higher friends or knowing Nial could be explain by that… Maybe not only Sookie has a strange family tree? We haven’t got any of this in books, but that is A.B. show, anything is possible!
but I think tak my imagination could be little more vivid than Alan B.’s

    • #10 by Kat on July 6, 2011 - 6:55 pm

Yes, I didn’t understand that supposed chant by a supposed Wiccan. I think it’s connected more with Eric than Marnie herself because I thought it was supposed to be insinuated Marnie was a fraud or something until she was possessed.

I think it would be interesting if they included viking mythology but I think you are correct and the Inquisition.

No I do not think so but sometimes I think that too ha ha.

Transformers! More than meets the eye. Have I just aged myself? lol

I must disagree that Pam doesn’t want to be Sookie’s friend. Her abruptness and tone is just HER. She’s always that way. Even when she was trying to get Eric to save himself using Sookie, her tone was nearly the same (with a little more whine).

From Pam’s point of view, she’s being a good friend to Sookie. I imagine she holds a similar view to Eric that coddling Sookie will not do her any good, and the sooner she embraces her strong fairy self, the better. And I believe she is recommending Eric in a most sincere way. It’s just her sarcastic tone always makes you wonder what she means. In fact, I think that tone is just her voice, lol.

I’m not really looking forward to the storyline with the baby. Honestly kids have no place in True Blood, with the exception of the Eric vs. Arlene’s kids scene. Because that was genuinely hysterical. Also, I don’t like Arlene much. I mean as a person. She’s very judgemental and although I suppose the baby will turn out to be evil, at this point there’s been to proof of it, so she’s not being a very good mother. I sort of think it would be funnier if the baby didn’t turn out to be evil. I love the fact that Terry seems like the sane one in that relationship. 🙂

Of course, True Blood is a character driven series and your post excellent as always. I was thinking about another TRANSFORMATION that has or is occurring this season and that is Sookie and Bill houses.

Bill’s house has been transformed into the palace of a King. Dark gray, white and black with overtones of animal prints, etc. Actually quite modern and reflecting Bill’s “true colors”. Now Sookie’s house being transformed. Actually her house being transformed by Eric.

Note the differences in the transformation. Eric chooses to restore the house to its former glory but not really updating its historic charm. Yes, painting and wallpapering but not really changing the original. Even the furniture for “Eric cubby hole” is reflective of his “old world charm”. Again, Eric showing his “true colors” also. Eric is down to earth and organic. He doesn’t try to be something he is not. Bill on the other hand trying to “personify” what royalty should be in his mind. Again Bill tries to “lie” about what or who he truly is.

    Just saying.

    • #14 by TruFan on July 6, 2011 - 7:51 pm

Don’t you think Eric was just trying to please Sookie when he did the house? Also, I don’t think he would have wanted to change it beyond recognition, he likes the house because it is so connected to her.

Although Bill’s house now seems really unlike his personality. In fact that picture that Kat posted almost made it seem like even he was uncomfortable in it. Maybe that just emphasizes how fake he is? Have we ever seen the real Bill? He seems to have a different face almost every single time we see him do anything. Maybe he doesn’t even know who he is himself.

This episode might have been about transformation, but it also feels like discovery. Everyone is sort of finding who they really are. Maybe Bill will finally find out to. I find I like him a lot more now as a character then I did when he was with Sookie. I hope they do some interesting things with him this season.

      • #15 by pbt on July 6, 2011 - 8:14 pm

Of course, I thought Eric was trying to please Sookie. Eric knows Sookie better than she knows herself. Eric chose to make only minimal changes.

Yes, I did say Bill was faking. That’s why I said that Bill chooses to create an environment that he thought she be reflective of royalty not truly what or who is Bill Compton. Will we ever find out who the real Bill Compton? Yes, the end of t he series. I think it will be a series of flashbacks of what truly happened and not what Bill Compton chose to remember.

      • #16 by Anonymous on July 6, 2011 - 8:21 pm

That would be an amazing finale, pbt, you should apply for a writer’s position on True Blood! 🙂 Of course I hope that finale doesn’t come for a few more years yet!

      • #18 by Kat on July 6, 2011 - 10:10 pm

well no, I think he did think it was best for her….like I told pbt, he wants to improve her without changing her completely (that’s what the house reflected).

Yes, I think Bill’s house is very fake and I think he realized how fake everything was…including Eric’s loyalty/ fealty.
I doubt he does either and he knows being fake makes you empty.

Yes, I find Bill more interesting when he does things other than pine for Sookie.

    • #19 by Kat on July 6, 2011 - 10:03 pm

thank you thank you. yeah I almost touched on that when I posted the pic of bill’s house.

I loooooved your descriptions of the homes.
I also noticed that Eric kept the house very low key but modern and fresh without turning it into something it’s not…..which is what he wants Sookie to be modern and fresh without turning her into something she’s not.

      • #20 by pbt on July 6, 2011 - 11:01 pm

Yes that touches on the whole alchemical elements of these two vampires. Eric the white/yellow light. Note color of Sookie house. Yes, its was all about cleansing the dirt of Bill. Bill being the negredo stage of the process. Negredo being the metaphor for the “dark side of the soul”. Now if that doesn’t describe Bill Compton I don’t know what does.

Eric being albedo or whitening and purification. Eric is responsible for the cleaning and brightening of not only Sookie’s house but eventually her existence in Bon Temps. He will be responsible for bringing the light back into life. Yeah!

      • #21 by Kat on July 7, 2011 - 5:41 pm

The cleansing of Sookie’s home was probably the most obvious metaphor.

Notice how dark a lot of the things in Bill’s home were before and after the transformation.

I think it’s very relevant as Cindy and I discussed that Eric is trying to freshen her home up without changing it and so that also means he’s trying to freshen up Sookie without changing her too.

  9. #22 by Cindy on July 6, 2011 - 8:40 pm

Excellent essay, as always, Kat. The part of this piece I like the most is the “Eric points out Sookie’s ongoing TRANSFORMATION” … Truth is I believe it’s been going on for a couple of seasons now.

Sure Eric is never shy about expressing his desire for Sookie – both physically and being “his” – but he has almost ALWAYS told her things about her, the situation, etc., because SHE NEEDS TO HEAR IT. He knows and respects the fact that she is a strong person and wants to stick up for herself, but let’s face it, sometimes our little Miss Stackhouse rushes into situations without thinking about the consequences – probably always thinking in the back of her mind that her knight in shining armor (Bill) would always come running to her rescue. It’s only in the aftermath do we (Sookie) look back and realize, “huh, maybe Eric WAS right after all.”

The flip side of that coin is that Bill was pretty much always shielding her from everything, trying to keep her safe and protect her (which I still believe is mostly a bunch of BS on his part) while never having the guts to tell her the truth about herself, other supes, the danger she was in, etc.

Haters are going to hate, but that kind of smothering “protection” she always got from Bill wasn’t doing her any good, whereas Eric’s blunt honesty is usually better for her in the end – and hopefully she’ll start realizing it, i.e, her transformation. 🙂

    • #23 by Kat on July 6, 2011 - 10:07 pm

Yes, probably until the end ugh lol

He does what is best for her….not because he wants to look good to her.
(like Damon vs. Stefan on vampire diaries though I dont watch that much lol)
Eric will do what is best for her even if he looks bad, Bill will not.

Again, he wanted her blissfully ignorant so he could control her and in turn, her feelings about them and the situation. He wanted to supress her supernatural nature in order to “protect her,” but just made her more vulnerable in the process.

      • #24 by Cindy on July 6, 2011 - 10:45 pm

Now see? You made all that I said sound much better. LOL *wink*

why thank you ma’am but you pointed it out 🙂

    Love your recap.
To pick up on what pbt wrote about alchemical transformation, in the Tibetan Buddhist system Yellow represents the Earth and can symbolise how Pride can be transformed into Quality and Balance.
Not only does Eric paint Sookie’s house that colour, she’s driving a yellow car.
Yellow can also be linked to the nose and the sense of smell…

    • #27 by pbt on July 7, 2011 - 9:58 am

And now that you mention the idea of balance, I couldn’t help but notice Sookie moving her bed to the middle of the wall. It had been placed slightly off center and Sookie moves in to the middle and creating balance. Also note to oneself, the headboard of Sookie’s bed now has a very nice phallic symbol in the center cut out. 🙂 Nice work, set design.

      • #28 by Kat on July 7, 2011 - 5:33 pm

THe set designer is a genius in their own right I do believe.

    • #29 by Kat on July 7, 2011 - 5:07 pm

      thanks anna!

Wow I am so glad you pointed that out! it makes perfect sense!

  11. #30 by anna on July 7, 2011 - 11:12 am

And now that you mention the headboard, it could relate to the citrinitas stage, described in early alchemical texts, that took place between the albedo and the rubedo stages.
Citrinitas refers to yellowing, enlightenment, the sun, male, the dawning of the solar light.
The Chemical Wedding that is accomplished in this stage of the process is the union between the King and Queen, male and female.

    • #31 by Kat on July 7, 2011 - 5:32 pm

Alchemy seems to be prominent in True Blood (as the Ancient Pythoness has made clear).

      Very nice fact.

  12. #32 by TruFan on July 14, 2011 - 9:38 pm

This is a bit off-topic, but I just realized that Sookie isn’t able to read Steve Newland’s mind. If she could, she would have realized that he knew she was a spy and they wouldn’t have been captured. Now that Steve is missing, is it possible he was a fairy? Just throwin’ it out there. We know that other fairies or part fairies were already taken (like Barry)
