Talktrueblood’s Worst of Season 4- With Poll Results

5th Worst thing about Season 4:

Talktrueblood says: Bill orders Eric’s Execution and then get’s credit for saving his life

There were only two reasons for this scene: to remind the audience that Sookie still loves Bill and to remind the audience that Bill still loves Sookie (as if we needed that crammed down our throats and bashed into our heads until pieces of skull fell out)…ANYWAY…

BUT this spectacle actually served as a reminder to Bill fans and those that have no real loyalties, that their opinion of Bill ase a merciful, loving, and rational creature  is valid (oh yeah , it also served as a reminder that Bill and Sookie are MEANT-to-BE ***Bill lover sticks a tongue out***).

*Cough-Cough* Bill lovers: Did Bill really have to condemn Eric to death in the first place? Doesn’t seem like he REALLY NEEDED TO and now he’s a savior because he didn’t kill his victim? OOOOOHK, WHATEVER.

Poll participants say: Pam gives up Eric to Bill

I always pictured Pam, and I believe rightly so, as being loyal to the death and willing to lay down her life down for her maker. After all, she was tough enough to face the Magister like she did. I know Eric was under amnesia and all, but I don’t think Eric’s mental illness should make love like that any different. Pam as a character is not only loyal to death when it comes to Eric in-my-opinion, she LOATHES BILL and KNOWS HE TRIED TO KILL THEM BEFORE. The NOT OUT-OF-CHARACTER PAM, would sooner have met the true death by being peeled apart by a Magister than give Eric up, especially to BILL!  Pam giving up Eric to Bill was either a convenient plot device that disregarded the depth of Pam’s loyalty OR it was meant to suggest Pam is totally selfish, even when it comes to Eric (which makes no sense given her emotion toward Eric and if true, has made her a totally one-dimensional character on True Blood)….a total travesty either way.

4th Worst thing about Season 4:

Talktrueblood says:  Sookie gets shot so Bill can give her blood

Another hated convenient plot device! The only reason that this happened was so Sookie could start thinking about Bill again (like she used to anyway) and give the audience another chance to be reminded that Bill is supposedly some kind-of hero.  Apparently they ran out of ideas (although many fans with no writing experience certainly had some) and decided to speed things up a bit toward the full-blown love triangle…

Who needs a season or so for someone to get over a break-up naturally when we have Bill’s blood make her get over it in a few weeks? Oh yeah, we need a rescue to give him a reason to do it and then it’ll be ok too! COOL! …

Good news guys, we can now start the full blown love triangle (eh, square)- right now and exploit the fans for all they’re worth! DRAMA! (*rolls eyes*)

Poll participants say: Jason’s rape scene (that also goes basically unadressed)

WOW. That’s all I said about this scene when I saw it. Of course, it was hard to have much of a reaction when you were sitting next to your mom watching it.

Was it there to bring in the ratings (ew)? Was it there to make fun of Jason for taking sexual advantage of women? Was it there for the audience to get worked up about a storyline that wasn’t addressed again for the rest of the season, at all?

Nobody knows, all we know is this scene was pointless and awkward. Shame is, they could have done so much with Jason being raped. We could have seen  a Jason changed by his experience and unwilling to have sex without a trusting, commited relationship that makes him feel safe and a Jason regretful about the past. However, all we got was a Jason ready to hop right on the Jessica train (which belonged to his buddy Hoyt no less) right away with no anxiety other than resisting the guilt it would cause him in regards to Hoyt. I know he had her blood and all, but wouldn’t some of his traumas outweigh that at all? It seems like they would at least a little, especially since we’ve come to figure out Jason is a big softie deep down.
3rd Worst thing about Season 4:

Talktrueblood says: Sookie’s threesome dream about Bill and Eric

The entire time I watched this scene, except for the beginning with Eric, I was thinking about throwing up the food I just ate. We all knew this was coming if we watched the spoilers, but it didn’t make it any less painful.

I know it’s a dream world and Sookie is coming into her sexuality (I thought she was already there after she jumped Bill bones immediately following her near-death at his hands), but this dream makes no sense in any way. Besides the improbability of Bill and Eric sharing her, we have Bill interrupting ladies-boners everywhere (and Eric doing the same thing to Bill lovers simultaneously) and men everywhere laughing at the ridiculousness of it all.  How is this enjoyable to any viewers that care about what they’re watching? Eric lovers feel anything is ruined by Bill and vice versa and male viewers would frankly view Sookie as an indecisive slut who views men as toys (though I don’t view her that way, it is insulting to both male characters).  This was obviously a ratings ploy and a way to set-up Alan Ball’s crash-course in expedited plots…how very trashy and lazy. I expect better out of those writers (at least I did before this season).

2nd Worst thing about Season 4:

Talktrueblood says: The baby Mickey/ possessed doll story line

What a waste of Lafayette’s character, screen time, and all actors involved. Seriously? Arlene and Renee’s baby is supernatural too and see ghosts (really). Therefore, we get a plot about a ghost that comes back not only to face the death of her baby via Lafayette’s body, but also to make some commentary about the history of racial inequality in the South while she’s at it (Um ok,). Apparently this plot is so fascinating to Alan Ball and company, that they needed almost the entire season to let it play out too (a little anti-climatic if you ask me). BIGGEST WASTE OF TIME SINCE TAKING THE ENTIRETY OF SEASON TWO TO RESOLVE THE MARYANN PLOT…

I AM SO GLAD I DIDN’T WASTE ANY TIME THINKING ABOUT THIS ONE!

Poll participants say: Sookie gets shot so Bill can give her blood

‘see above’

WORST THINGS ABOUT SEASON 4:

Talktrueblood and Poll Participants say (tie in answers):  THE ENTIRE COUCH SCENE and when Sookie tells Eric she loves Bill too.

It’s pretty much impossible to say enough about the couch scene and Sookie’s constant declaration that she loves Bill too.  There are numerous things both sides of the fence wouldn’t like and even some casual viewers can see they don’t like this pathetic version of Eric. Why can’t Eric simply express his feelings and still hold his own at the same time? WHY????

Anyway…

The scene is treating Bill and Eric as equals and even despite the fact that I have clearly shown this is not the case. That is the most sickening thing about it to Eric fans.

How could this scene be a pleasure for anyone?

I think what AB actually did was attempt to choose ratings over the story.
He attempted to give every member of the love square hope. Sookie is alone now so she’s even free to have Alcide come running in and fill her void and play around with Bill while she’s at it.
She can spend the entire next season having her cake and eating it too. I wouldn’t be surprised if she slept with Alcide next season and Bill and Eric at this point .
She can flirt around with all three and so he thinks that will be enough to satisfy all the fans. The Bill fans are happy she forgave him and the Eric fans are happy she admitted she always wanted him and the Alcide fans are happy she’s not with either vampire anymore and she kinda semi-accepted his speech….

But maybe he forgot that when you try to please everybody you end up pleasing nobody.

Eric fans are not happy because she forgave Bill and went mushy on him after everything and of course totally cast his begging aside.
Bill fans are not happy because she fawned about wanting Eric from the start and how she can imagine life without Eric and Eric is going to constantly be a presence.

(neither are happy she was entertaining things with Alcide if even for a moment)

Alcide fans are not happy because she still expressed her undying love for the vampires and told him that she’s been there (basically saying she views his feelings as a total rebound).

AND…

This scene is a total mess and is not only uninteresting, but also completely vomit-inducing. I am all for female-power, but really it’s undermining female power while seeming to embrace it.

Everyone was out-of-character and it seemed like some writer’s misguided and dreadful fantasy brought to the screen. I am simply hoping that doesn’t mirror the rest of the show at this point.

Talktrueblood:

6. Jason’s rape scene

‘see above’

7. Bill becomes King Bill

This makes no sense other than once again, being a convenient plot device. How can we be expected to believe that, in most circumstances, most of the vampire’s in Bill’s Kingdom would respect a vampire that is less than 200 years old? It seemed like it was simply there to keep Bill center-stage during this season and give the Bill fans something to get excited about.

8. Bill’s sad face appears during Eric and Sookie’s first time

I never imagined that Eric and Sookie’s first time would be anything but worth the wait after all that build-up. While nice and enjoyable, it was completely ruined by Bill’s sad-face popping into the frame. That’s all I think about when I think about this scene and that’s wrong after how long Eric fans waited. I never thought I would have to contend with Bill fans having a reason to like the scene (sitting there and feeling sorry for Bill with an actual visual aid of Bill being sad) and it made me absolutely angry after how long we waited! It was totally unfair that I had to sit there and hear the Bill fan next to me gloat that Bill was in the background and remind me that I should feel sorry for Bill (even after everything he did but did not pay for). It couldn’t even wait till after their scene together (for shame).

9. Pam gives up Eric

‘see above’

10. They tease Tara’s death even though you know she’ll be back next season.

C’MON: We know these characters are on contract and are not going anywhere: Sookie, Bill, Alcide, Jason, Jessica, Pam, Sam, Lafayette, and TARA (yes Tara)!

Therefore, teasing any of their deaths as a SEASON FINALE is pointless and lazy and doesn’t leave a lot of anticipation. We know Tara will be undead or a ghost if she “dies” at least.

If I am wrong, I guess I will take a big egg on my face but I doubt it.

9. Pam and Sookie become enemies

As if we needed another reason to get annoyed with Sookie or see Pam as a one-dimensional character. As the books showed us, much can be gained from a Sookie and Pam friendship that builds up. However, it seems Alan Ball and company are going in the opposite direction for whatever stupid reason and I hope it’s not just to try to make Eric fans feel sorry for Pam and wish they’d never asked for their pairing (UGH) or show Pam is just that one-dimensional emotionless, selfish, and  spoiled brat.

10.  Bill and Eric improbably become friends and allies

HELLO? You two may be tied together by the knowledge of Sookie’s fairyhood, but you both know the other loves Sookie enough not to put her in danger because of it so there’s no need to make an alliance now.  What about the fact that BILL WANTS ERIC DEAD? Are we supposed to believe Eric was so impressed with Queen Bill that he’s now a devoted subject full of forgiveness, admiration, and total trust and respect (aside from thinking he isn’t too love able). It seems that way, but it just isn’t believable and to me creates less drama than them remaining enemies but still being on the run. Maybe their supposed to bond over their mutual heartbreak (gag). I hope I find out Bill and Eric were just using each other, because if this is the precursor to a Bill-Sookie-Eric polyamorous relationship then I am definitely out for good.

Again, the writers have made the impossible happen because it’s convenient to whatever the plot is…..(I hope I can stop saying that when I critic the show next year but it seems unlikely).

You very accurately voiced what I was thinking when I voted, and I’m sure you’re the voice of many others as well. The real question is, when is Alan going to listen? Or better yet, maybe it’s time to get some NEW blood into True Blood and replace Alan with someone who isn’t so bent on portraying his own personal fan fiction. Personally I blame this sort of rubbish on Stephanie Meyers. Although I’ve enjoyed the twilight films as a guilty pleasure, she has made Hollywood fan fiction acceptable, and it really shouldn’t be.

Unfortunately I doubt he ever will….I don’t blame it on her I just blame it on the obsession with skin and flash that has dominated the minds of the writers over the story. I do blame her for making vampires into what they are perceived as in popular culture- a some teenage fantasy. Of course, I don’t think that’s fair but that’s how they are perceived bc of stories like that by some people.

I really should have known by the careless way Alan Ball treated the aftermath of Jason’s rape, that the latter part of season 4 was going to go downhill fast. It was such an up and down season that it was hard to grasp anything of substance. It is a downright shame that Alan Ball has such quality actors that he does not use to their full potential. Jason could have had real growth out of his being raped repeatedly but no such luck. It turns out he was only raped so Jessica could give him blood. I am seeing a vomit-inducing pattern here that he will NEVER let go of.

What I mean by that is that he had some story-line gold mines that he just dropped and cast asides as if they were crap. Example number one: Eric actually knowing the witch who cast the spell on him would have been awesome. He was around during the Spanish Inquisition, ya know? Opportunity lost, now Ball can ever get that gold mine back, more’s the pity because it would have been great story-telling.

Blackburn actually having a history with Bill and Eric was another missed opportunity at a gold mine. What the heck do I know though? I am merely a fan, that is expected to swallow the crap AB dishes out. Instead of using the plots to fuel the story, he used to them to weaken it instead. What we got was watered down to the point where it did not taste the same. It started out so strong in some areas but then flattened itself out. I am still on the fence about watching Season 5 because I don’t have much hope that Ball will do things better and treat me and other fans as if we have brains. Right now, he must surely think we are stupid and I find that very insulting as a viewer.

epi 1 in faeland started up so bad, they had to throw in epi 2 so all the fans wouldn’t bail out. Well. then ging us Queen Bill, Queen of the cemetery.. & just got worse. The so called “sex” scenes with Eric & SS were messed up will Bill’s face most of the time. I WILL NOT WATCH S5.
I’ll DVR the epis & go along having a real life. 5 min of Eric is all we get anyway & he’s minus one of his balls because the Queen needed it. I cannot even rewatch epi 12. God knows I’ve tried. I’ll stick with youtube.. I even got banned from the Wetpaint EB site .. which is a badge of honor.
My whole life changed because of TB. We;;, I have my life back now.. still in love with Eric & he just needs to stay out of Bon Temps for awhile so he can grow back his testcle. AB can take his “organic” TB & flush it down the toilet with Bill’s clown tears. it’s all billshit anyway.

Hi Kat! I´ll print this post and sitck it in the wall so I can remember why I hated this season. I think I´m going to make as it never existed, so I can give a chance to season 5.
Fortunately we still have fanfictions, and many of them are better written than season 4.
i was watching previous seasons and I really wanted to cry, why did you ruin everything you built, you stupid AB and you company of writers??
I agree with Diane, that there was a lot of good stories wasted…what a pity, for us.
And I would never forgive how they spoiled Pam and Eric, and of course what are they going to do with Terry…
Anyway, it´s good to read you, I miss True True Blood!!

    and waiting for the best!

Kat, you might have already read this. It is from TV Guide Magazine, issue dated September 26-October 2, 2011

There are some interesting spoilers for season 5…

Is Tara dead? “How can she be NOT dead?” asks creator Alan Ball

Writer Raelle Tucker and Executive producer Alan Ball talk to TV Guide about True Blood’s Season 4 finale and some hints about what will be happening in Bon Temps in Season 5.

Will Tara (Rutina Wesley) Survive? “I can’t say whether she will be back in her present form, but we’ll continue to tell Tara’s story,” says Tucker.

Are Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) marked men after killing Nan and her guards? “They’ve been fighting witches all season, and now they will have to fight the power elite of their own kind,” says Ball. Adds Tucker: “For once in their lives they need to rely on and trust each other. They team up to face a common enemy.”

Is Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) really back? Yes confirms Ball–and with “an interesting new alliance,” teases Tucker.

Will Werewolf Alcide (Joe Manganiello) finally win Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) heart? “They have a deep friendship and chemistry that we’ll continue to explore,” Tucker says. “But Sookie will be trying to stand on her own two feet next season.”

Will ghosts from Terry’s (Todd Lowe) past threaten his wife, Arlene (Carrie Preston)? “The ghosts will come back, and he and Arlene are going to be challenged by that,” Tucker confirms. “Terry’s PTSD comes from a particular incident we’ll learn more about. Scott Foley’s Patrick Devins has a huge part to play.”

What kind of vampire will former fang-hater Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) be? “He will do what he believes is the righteous thing that God wants him to do, although it will be altered by his new condition,” Tucker says.

Any exciting new characters coming up? “There are a couple of new roles that will be very sexy,” says Ball. One in particular is “a strong, mysterious female at the center of one of our main stories,” Tucker says. “She’s fierce, one of the strongest women we will have seen on the show, a force to be reckoned with.”

Sookie gets shot so Bill can give her blood

Umm, don’t ya’ll find that shooting awfully convenient? I mean, Bill’s snipers had their laser sights TRAINED on the person [Marnie] who was causing all of the trouble yet they never fired when she was in their sights. Suddenly, when all hell breaks loose, they’re randomly shooting into a dark cemetery? Ratt reveal anyone? Let it/made it happen on purpose anyone?

This season to me was horrible. I really loved the second and third season and this one really was a let down. I hate the whole triangle situation but I was going back through seasons 2 and 3 and I realized how much they focus in on Eric and Sookies sexual tension/attraction. I think that in season 5 she will be single mostly, maybe date around a little. But Eric may as well, since they mentioned his old lover and Godrics creation Nora coming into the picture. But what I noticed is that the two characters who are really growing, especially together, are Eric and Sookie. Bill is still on the same page, except we know he’s nuts. I think they threw him in as a big distraction. If Sookie agreed to be with Eric now it wouldn’t be the same since he just went through amnesia and he’s still not fully himself. Another thing is I agree with you mentioning that Sookie is discovering herself because they mentioned that she will learn more about herself as a fairy. If we think about it, Eric really encourages her to be herself in that aspect and let the “fairy sookie” come out. Bill on the other hand is completely different. It’s not that he doesn’t like her being a fairy, it’s just he doesn’t encourage her to embrace it and feel empowered. He just wants to be with her at all times watching over her basically. I think Eric and her will go through a lot more together and they both will have their changes. This show spent over two seasons focusing on this attraction between Sookie and Eric. I just started to watch True Blood and I zipped through all the episodes so for me I remember all the little things. I think they are really amazing together. I think the writers just have a lot of drama and more tension planned since it works well with these two. I just hope the season will be great overall, this one disappointed me. They better get the characters back to normal as well!

Great blog by the way, just discovered it! Love your insight.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Sookie and Bill as we all know started dating in the beginning of the show. Most cases couples who start out dating in shows never end up together. I know it was said that a good relationship doesn’t make an interesting show, which is correct. So instead I noticed they really started to fault Bill in the second and third season and really get him out of the picture conveniently. Even when in the 2nd season, Jason talked to Eric and then to Jason in private. Even as intimidating as Eric is, he was much nicer to Jason. Bill was awkward and looked like he was in pain. I think that was shown for a reason. A while after that, Bill refused to help Tara. Eric on the other hand helped Sookies loved ones because he cared for her. I also think that now Sookie is afraid to love Eric. He says he’s different but I think it’s still weird for her. Eric is intriguing and powerful and she knows he cares for her in his own way. I think she ran to Bill also is because he’s the safe one. He’s predictable as far as vampires go. She clearly forgot what he has done to her and clung to the idea that he’s not Eric and he shares his feelings. Eric will need to find a balance. I love the bad ass, sarcastic, and intimidating Eric. But I think that in time he will open up to Sookie and have a balance, kind of like with Godric. I think AB knows what he’s doing, or else true blood would have been cancelled. Most likely they are saving that suspense for next season with Sookie and that drama. Either that or he is trying to make that show even better than the previous seasons which would be hard I think. This show has great characters, if he keeps them the way they are! It’s not like they’re dragging it on, but if the next season will be like season 4 they will most likely end True Blood.

Wow I knew there were alot of inconsistencies but I had no idea how many till I saw them all here listed together. Sad to say the way they forgot character traits and the integrity in lieu of serving the plot has lost me as a fan. I wont be back for season 5. But thanks talktrueblood for making the list and giving any doubt I might have had about leaving the series a good kick in the tuckus. 🙂

What the hell are you talking about? The scene in which Bill almost executes Eric is not about propping up Bill, although he clearly learned something new. Bill spared Eric because Eric’s experience essentially mirrored Bill’s. Bill also was a void until he met Sookie and because of her, he learned what it means to love. He also learned from Eric that loving Sookie means wanting her to be happy even if not with him. This was an important evolution in Bill’s character. Also did nobody notice that this was the first positive interaction between Eric and Bill? Eric wasn’t acting like an arrogant dick and treating Bill with disrespect. And, yes, Bill deserved respect from Eric because he was his King. It doesn’t matter how Eric felt about Bill personally, he had no right to be a douche to him. Would you treat your boss that way? Eric recognized Bill’s authority, acknowledged that Bill and Sookie’s relationship was real and had value, and showed him that loving Sookie means letting her make her own choices. Eric saved his own life and helped Bill be a better man, which is what Bill always wanted. This was a great scene!

    • #13 by Kat on April 22, 2012 - 8:38 pm

It was completely there to prop up Bill. The reaction you described was the reassured reaction that he wanted some of the audience members to think or Bill fans to think. Of course, most of them won’t ask themselves why he was going to kill Eric in the first place, already knowing he was vulnerable and would have posed no threat. Most people won’t think the obvious either after having your reaction: Bill did that because he still has a chance with Sookie if he allows her that happiness for now.

Im not sure how I would treat someone that HAD TRIED TO KILL ME while pretending to be my friend…which is what Bill did just at the end of last season! Even if they were my boss, I don’t think I would respect or trust that person. How many times did Bill show Eric respect when Eric was his sheriff? Almost never. Yet he demands respect now that he’s in charge? ha ha.

I can get your perspective but that’s how I process whats happened before. Bill always has a selfish motive no matter what good he seems to be doing.

Pam gave up Eric to Bill because Pam is not perfect. She is a very flawed person far too concerned with her own vanity. In the books, Pam was never challenged on such a personal level, so we didn’t see this. If anything, TB Pam is a far more complex and interesting character than book Pam.

Sookie got shot because she got involved in vampire business…again. And yes Bill did give her blood to save her life. Was he supposed to let her die? He had nothing to gain by this except that he loves Sookie and wants her to live. Vampire blood never prevented Sookie from making her own decisions.

Jason’t rape was horrific, but it wasn’t addressed because AB didn’t care or wanted to make fun of him. Think aboit it. How did we expect Jason to act? Did we expect him to fall apart, try to kill himself, rant at all his friends for not understanding, and then join a support group like Tara did? He could have done that if he had been a woman! Jason is a man. He tried to tell Hoyt who was not empathetic at all and too preoccupied with his own problems. He couldn’t tell Sookie because he couldn’t lay a burden of knowing something like that on his sister. I doubt that Bon Temps has a support group for male survivors of rape. Jason couldn’t even file police report because what would he say? That he was raped by werepanthers to propagate their race? He felt sorry for the women of Hot Shot–raping him was the best sexual experience they ever had. And the truth is if Jason revealed what happened to him, the fine people of Bon Temps would either make fun of him or think that he deserved it for acting like a tomcat for years, the way he said himself. Jason was tortured, drugged, and raped, and nearly died, but the only thing that he could do about it was shove it down deep inside himself and pretend it never happened because men don’t talk about things like that. This is a gender bias in our society. Our outrage is justified, but we shouldn’t be angry at TB or Alan Ball. We should be angry at our culture, which offers very little support to men who survive sexual abuse.

Sookie’s threesome dream with Bill and Eric was about Sookie taking control of her dreams and her life.
